Short answer: The check engine light doesn't tell you what's wrong — it tells you the car detected something wrong. The actual answer is a 5-character Diagnostic Trouble Code stored in the computer, like P0420 or P0171, that any OBD2 scanner can pull in under a minute.

Every car sold in the US since 1996 has an OBD2 port, standardized by federal law. It's almost always under the dashboard on the driver's side within arm's reach of the steering column. The format is standardized across all makes and models: one letter (P for powertrain, B for body, C for chassis, U for network) followed by four digits that identify the exact fault.

Common codes and what they mean: P0300 — random misfire (spark plugs, coils, vacuum leak, or fuel pressure). P0171/P0174 — running lean (vacuum leak, dirty MAF sensor, weak fuel pump). P0420 — catalytic converter efficiency below threshold (could be the $800–1,500 cat, or a $150–300 O2 sensor — the scanner narrows it, a mechanic confirms it). P0442 — small evap leak (start with the gas cap). P0128 — coolant temp below threshold (thermostat stuck open, usually a $40–80 part). The practical limit of a basic scanner: it reads and clears emissions/powertrain codes. For ABS, SRS, transmission, or live data you need a mid-tier Bluetooth scanner.

Read all codes before diagnosing any one. P0171 (lean) and P0300 (misfire) appearing together almost always means the lean condition is causing the misfire — fix the vacuum leak first, not the spark plugs.
